How much does a childcare assistant earn?

As a nanny, you receive a salary as an assistant calculated based on your monthly working hours, which are included in your employment contract. Your salary as a childminder also complies with the legal requirements imposed by your collective agreement and the Labor Code. A number of amounts will also be added to your assistant salary: maintenance allowances, meals, mileage expenses, etc.

The minimum hourly wage for a childcare worker

The minimum hourly wage for a childcare assistant corresponds to 1/8 of 2.25 SMIC, which is €2.88 gross per hour or €2.25 net (€2.20 for Haut-Rhin, Bas-Rhin, and Moselle) in 2021

What amount do you receive each month as a childcare assistant?

Be aware that depending on where you live and the number of alternative childcare solutions available (type of daycare) or the number of daycare assistants, the rates for daycare assistants vary. Feel free to inquire with other childcare assistants in your neighborhood or the PMI to find out what salary is being requested.

The salary below is paid for each child taken care of, even if two of them are from the same family.

For example, the following salaries are:

— Paris: 5 hours of SMIC/day* — Large cities: between 3 and 4.5 hours of SMIC/day — Small towns: between 2.5 and 4.5 hours of SMIC/day — Rural areas: between 2.25 and 3.5 hours of SMIC/day

* As indicated below, your daily remuneration must not exceed 5 times the hourly SMIC per child cared for, which is 5 x €10.03 gross, in 2019.

The maximum daily salary for registered nannies

The maximum daily salary for a “registered nanny” must not exceed 5 hours of SMIC per child cared for, which is 5 x €10.25 = €51.25 gross per day of activity declared to Pajemploi in 2021 (€39.98 net, €39.21 in Alsace Moselle). This is known as the Pajemploi ceiling.

Note: this Pajemploi ceiling allows the family that employs you to benefit from PAJE support and FAC, an essential element for parents deciding to hire a childcare assistant!

The increase in your hours beyond 45 hours is included in this amount.

Your monthly salary

When you regularly care for a child, your nursery assistant salary must be monthly from the family that employs you, meaning averaged over the year, whether you are in an incomplete year or a full year. So you receive the same salary each month.

Good to know: feel free to check our dedicated monthly page!

Increase your hours beyond 45h

As you know, your overtime hours (beyond 45 hours of weekly work) are increased. The increase rate is included in your contract and has been negotiated between you and the family that employs you. However, this increase is not included in your monthly salary. It is paid to you each month based on the actual number of overtime hours worked.

Other amounts that will be added to your assistant allowance

Your maintenance allowances

IE funds for children’s toys

The maintenance benefits are added to your assistant salary.

They correspond to the expenses you incur for the care of the child(ren): electricity, water, heating, toys, childcare equipment, etc., and are the responsibility of the parents for each child received.

Attention: Diapers and meals do not qualify for maintenance allowances.

Good to know: feel free to consult our maintenance allowance sheet to know all the general conditions!

Your meal allowances

The calculation of these meal allowances depends on the agreement made with the employer’s parents: — either the parents bring you their child’s meal every day, which you only need to heat up. In this case, you do not receive any additional allowance; — or you cook meals for the children yourself: in this case, you receive an allowance per meal paid by the employer’s parents. The amount of this allowance must be determined at the beginning of the contract and may vary depending on the child’s age.

Your mileage allowances

You use your personal car to take the children you care for to an activity or to the childcare relay you depend on. In this case, the family that employs you must reimburse your mileage expenses.

Your paid leave

You work in an incomplete year: in this case, the family you care for must pay you for paid leave for an incomplete year in addition to your monthly salary.

Your monthly remuneration is therefore complicated to calculate, especially for employer parents who do not know much. Feel free to delve deeply into these points and give them a hand at the end of the month!
